Busy start to July

07-02-09 - It's 2pm on July 2nd and we are at 4 calls for the month already.  On the 1st we had a fire alarm at a local daycare and later in the day a crash on the Interstate which resulted in a fly-out.  Around lunch time today the 18-01 box was hit for the kitchen fire.  Passing off-duty police officer Keith Morris hit it with an extinguisher and the box was held to Engines 20 and 19.  About 1.5 hours later the 30-101 box was hit for smoke in the basement.  Chief 19 (Dressler) arrived to find a 6000+ square foot house with limited access and nothing showing.  The cause of the smoke was determined to be a malfunctioning central vacuum system.


Late Morning Crash

06-22-09 - Just before noon today the 19-02 box was hit for the car into a tree on Pine Hill Rd.  Engine 19 arrived to find two victims out of the car with minor injuries.  Crews assisted EMS and checked for fluids prior to returning.


Working Pickup Truck Fire

06-12-09 - Around 1520 hours Engine and Tanker 19 were alerted for the truck fire at Wertzville and Pine Hill Roads.  Chief 19 arrived to find a Ford F-150 with heavy fire in the passenger compartment and it was just west of the intersection in Hampden Twp.  Engine 19 arrived and deployed a handline while the Tanker established a fill line to the Engine.  Quick work was made of the fire and crews remained for 20 minutes for overhaul.

  


Dryer Fire

05-30-09 -  At 0026hrs. Tanker 19 was alerted for the dryer fire on Conifer Lane in Silver Spring Twp.  The Tanker, with 3, arrived and was assigned to pick up E-133 (New Kingstown) line and establish a dump site at the end of the long lane.  The dump site operations were set up but were not utilized due to quick work of the crews at the house.  The tanker cleared in about 45 minutes.


  Early Morning House Fire

04-29-09 - Around 1am the 31-07 box was sent for the mobile home fire on Sportsmans Lane in Silver Spring Twp.  Chief 231 (Hendersen) arrived to find a working double wide with all occupants out of the house.  Tanker 19 arrived and drove down the narrow lane and supplied Engine 31 while Chief 33 (Hall) was getting the tanker shuttle set up.  The house was a total loss but no one was injured.

 
  Early Morning Fire

04-28-09 - At 0408am EPFD was sent to 222 S. Enola Drive in the 17-01 box for a stove fire.  Fire was to be as a result of a domestic dispute.  Chief's 5-B (Rudeck), Chief 5 (Bumgardner), and Chief 19 (Dressler) arrived at the same time to find the resident dumping extinguishers onto the fire, knocking most of it down.  Engine 19 arrived as the first fire unit and assumed side A/B with a hydrant and the crew was directed to the kitchen with a foam can.  Engine 20 (Summerdale) arrived and found minor extension into the second floor, which they took care of.  Control was marked in about 10 minutes.

 
 

2 Alarms in Hampden

04-08-09 - Around lunchtime crews were alerted to the house fire on Armitage Way in Hampden Twp.  Co. 30 (Hampden) arrived to find heavy fire in a large two story home and requested the 2nd alarm and eventually 3 tankers to stand-by.  Engine 19 assisted with the primary water source after an incident with the supply line.  Tanker 19 staged and was released about 30 minutes into the call.  Thanks again to Engine 133 (New Kingstown) for covering.  Click here for some pictures.

 

Working Garage Fire and a Crash

03-23-09 - Crews got an early start with a working garage fire in Summerdale at 0505am.  Engine 19 arrived and layed 1000' of 5" from the hydrant as the secondary water source.  A handline and the Ram were pulled to protect the exposures and the engine also supplied Trucks 17 and 30.  Thanks to Engine 133 (New Kingstown) for covering and assisting with returning the engine to service.  Around 4:30pm the 19-01 box was sent for the crash at Center and Wertzville.  Chief 19 (Dressler) arrived to find minor injuries and no hazards. 


Two Working Fires within 5 hours

02-24-09 - At 1951  hours on the 23rd the tanker was dispatched to Firehouse Road in the village of Perdix in Perry County for the working house fire.  The Tanker arrived and assisted with overhaul and providing water.  Around 0030 hours on the 24th the Engine was summoned to Camp Hill on 2nd alarm for the working house fire at 10 S. 17th Street.  Engine 19 arrived and was placed on the hydrant feeding Rescue 14.


 

One Overturned

02-04-09 - Around 0830 this morning the 19-98 box was hit for the car overturned in the 1800 block of Center Street.  Engine and Tanker 19 arrived to find one overturned with one occupant still inside.  Crews stabilized the vehicle and assisted with extrication and patient care.  Later in the day the engine ran a kitchen fire in 21's District.  The Engine crew laid a supply line from the scene and assisted with extinguishment and overhaul.


 

Garage Fire and a Crash

01-19-09 - At 2:30pm the Tanker was alerted to the 31-07 box for a commercial garage fire.  Tanker 19 arrived w/ 4 on board and went interior to investigate.  Crews found a fire around the chimney that was extinguished by the owner.  Crews opened up the roof to check for hot spots.  After returning the 19-05 box was hit for a crash on Oyster Mill Rd.  Chief 19 (Dressler) arrived to find a car into a tree w/ patients self extricated.


 

House fire in the 17 District

12-16-08 - At 2230 hours the 17-01 box was sent for smoke in the house at 3 W. Highland Ave.  Engine 19 arrived as the first in piece and secured their water supply while deploying a line into the house.  Crews found fire in the basement that had extended to the floor and walls on the first floor.  As additional units arrived a second line was pulled off of Engine 19.  Extensive overhaul was needed due to clutter in the house.


 

Engine Stand-by

12-13-08 - This morning the engine and crew headed to Co. 33 (New Kingstown) to cover while they escorted Santa around their first due.  As usual, Chief Hall treated us to breakfast with NO bacon.  Something unusual also occurred.  We actually had two calls.  The first was a medical assist and then a crash about a 1/2 mile from their station.  Thanks to the crew at 33 for the hospitality.


Working Cars and Garage Fire

11-07-08 - Around 1440 hours the 31-05 box was hit for the cars on fire in the garage at 34 Linda Dr.  Co. 33 (New Kingstown) arrived to confirm a working fire and went to work with two lines.  Tanker 19 arrived and split crews.  Chief 119 (Dressler) and FF Wagner conducted the primary search with negative results and then assisted with opening up inside to check for extension.  Some pictures can be seen at www.newkingstownfire.com


 

Fire Prevention Display

11-01-08 - Today the West Enola Volunteers along with Rescue 18 (Citizens) and Truck 17 (Midway) did a fire prevention display at Members 1st on East Penn Dr.  Crews had apparatus on display as well as the smoke house.  Thanks to Members 1st for the invite.


Steady 24 hours

10-30-08 - After a dry spell things picked up a little around the house.  On Wednesday evening the EPFD held a Townhouse Tactics lecture at the station bringing 80 people.  Thanks to Lt. Chris Brown from Fairfax, VA Fire and Rescue Department for his extremely informative lecture.  Around 2am the Engine was sent to 770 Poplar Church Road for an electrical fire.  Around 0630am the Engine was then sent to replace another engine at a fire in the building in Camp Hill.  We were placed in service 1 minute after being dispatched.  Then at 0832am the Tanker and Engine were summoned to 2405 Hume Road in Hampden Twp. for a house fire.  Crews arrived to find a house under construction on fire.  Crews assisted with extinguishment while the Tanker pumped the hydrant to Engine 233 (New Kingstown).  Thanks to Tanker 23 (Upper Allen) for transferring while we were out.


Fatal House Fire

08-23-08 - While we were in the middle of our public service detail the Engine and Tanker were dispatched with multiple other units for a house fire with entrapment at 25 Penny Lane in Silver Spring Twp. Chief 133 (Horning Jr.) arrived to find a well involved mobile home. Engine 19 arrived first and laid all 1300 feet of 5 inch back the lane and began attacking the fire with the Ram.  Tanker 19 arrived as the 2nd piece and traveled back the lane and fed Engine 19 it's water until the water supply was established and the 5 inch got charged.  Shortly after the initial blitz crews were able to access and found a 24 year old male that had succumbed to the fire.  Tanker 19 and Engine 133 (New Kingstown) remained on scene for several hours for the investigation and to provide handlines to the overhaul crews. 


 

Public Service Detail

08-23-08 - For the 3rd year in a row the West Enola Volunteers attended the "Celebrate Enola" community day at the River of God Church on Wertzville Road.  We obtained the smoke house from Harrisburg City and were kept busy showing children how to move in a smoke filled house.  Thanks to Harrisburg City and the River of God Church.


 

Car into the woods

08-22-08 - Just before 9am the crash response was sent for a car down an embankment on S. Humer Street.  Engine 19 and Rescue 18 (Citizens) arrived to find a car that had left the driveway, crashed through a deck, and then proceeded about 30 feet down an embankment into the woods.  The driver suffered only minor injuries.  Click here for some pictures.


 

One Overturned

08-03-08 - A few hours after the Township drill wrapped up the 19-01 box was hit for the auto overturned in the 300blk of Wertzville Road.  This site has been the scene of many such crashes.  Chief 219 (McClure) arrived to find one auto on it's side with everyone self-extricated.  The box was held to 1 EMS unit and Co. 19 for traffic control and fluid control.


 

Township Training Exercise

08-03-08 - This morning crews from the EPFD, Hampden Twp., and the New Cumberland Army Depot met for a mock fire with victims at the East Pennsboro High School.  Crews were faced with many different scenarios throughout the drill.  We would like to thank the Training Committee and everyone involved including our stand-by companies.  Click here for a few pictures.


 

Nice Day for a trip

07-31-08 - After a few years of turning down invitations this year a crew loaded in the tanker and headed to Brandy Station, Virginia for their annual parade and carnival.  We arrived a few hours early so we could hang out and try to catch a call or two.  While no calls were answered we were treated as "Brothers" and were made to feel at home.  We were also greeted with cheers and clapping when the parade spectators found out we came from PA.  We walked away with the Farthest Distance and 2nd Place Tanker trophies! See you all next year and thanks again!!!


2 Calls at the same time in the 19 District

06-27-08 -  Around 12:30am a storm rolled through the area sending two first alarm assignments at the same time in the 19-01 box.  The first call was at 805 Wertzville Road for the house fire.  Chief 19 (Dressler) was advised that the house had been hit by lightning and the roof was to be on fire.  Engine 19 pulled a line as a precaution and crews entered and found a small fire in the attic.  Chief 220 (Wagner) had Operations.  The other call was to 110 Sgrignoli Lane for another house struck by lightning.  Chief 5 (Bumgardner) had the command.  Units checked the house and found no fire.


 

Working Hotel Fire- 3 alarms

06-14-08 - At 1920 hours the 21-11 box was hit for the working building fire at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel on the Camp Hill Bypass.  Engine 19 arrived and established its own water supply and supported the sprinkler system while the remainder of the crew advanced the first line in from Engine 221 (Creekside)  The Tanker came on 2nd alarm sending its manpower to assist wherever needed.  Thanks to E-233 (New Kingstown) and T-25 (Monroe) for once again covering for us.  Click here for a few pictures.


 

Noontime Crash

06-13-08 - At 4 minutes after noon the 19-01 box was hit for the crash at Wertzville Road and East Penn Drive.  Chief 19 (Dressler) arrived to find 2 cars on the roadway with negative injuries.  Crews swept debris and provided traffic control.  Click here for a few pictures.


 

One into the Building

06-12-08 - While the members were conducting our monthly company meeting the 20-13 box was sent for the car into the building at 204 College Hill Road.  Engine 19 arrived as the 2nd piece on scene and the box was quickly held by Chief 5 (Bumgardner) to Co. 20 (Summerdale), Engine 19, and Rescue 18 (Citizens).  Crews checked the structure before returning.


 

Working Garage in the First Due

06-02-08 - This afternoon the 19-01 box was hit for the garage fire in the 1500blk of Center Street.  Chief 19 (Dressler) marked on the air immediately after dispatch with a heavy column visible.  Chief 19 arrived to find a 2 story garage to the rear of the residence well involved.  Engine and Tanker 19 arrived and set up a dump site and pulled the gun off to knock down a bulk of the fire. Afternoon Crash

05-30-08 - A bit after 4pm today Chief 19 received a report of a 3 vehicle crash in the 1800 blk of Center Street.  The Chief came on the air and had Engine 19 and EMS sent and arrived to find a chain reaction rear end crash with one minor injury and fluid and debris on the roadway.  The Engine crew cleaned up fluids and debris then went in service.  A special thanks to the Fire Police for their assistance with the rush hour mess.


 

3rd Annual Big Cash Bash

05-17-08- Today crews from West Enola and Perdix gathered to hold our 3rd Annual Big Cash Bash.  The weather held out for most of the day and the crowd was great!!  We would like to thank everyone that attended and bought tickets.  Also thanks to all of the members from both companies for another great year!


 

Monday evening crash

04-21-08 - As crews were cleaning up from bingo the 19-02 box was hit for the crash at 1030 Dogwood Lane.  Chief 19 (Dressler) arrived to find a single vehicle that lost control and took out a basketball hoop that was concreted into the ground.  There was extensive front end damage to the car but no one was injured.  Crews performed fluid control and debris removal before going in service.


 

New Gear and Hose in service

04-15-08 - After a 6am Tanker transfer to Lisburn, the Volunteers met to unload all of our current attack and supply hose on the Engine and Tanker so we could load our new hose.  The new hose after discounts was $27,077 which a majority of that came from a grant.  Also, all of our new gear from our FEMA grant is now in service.  This was the first time that West Enola was able to purchase leather helmets for our active and dedicated volunteers.


Working Building Fire in Perry County

03-31-08 - Around 1030am multiple companies were dispatched for the commercial building fire on Flowers Lane, Rye Twp., Perry County.  Tanker 19 arrived as the first tanker and supplied it's tank water to Tanker 20 (Summerdale) who was utilized as an attack piece.  The crew split and assisted with extinguishment while the tanker driver hauled 7 loads of water to the dump site.  Multiple units from 3 counties operated at this fire, and they all worked exceptionally well together.  Once again we did not have the camera with us so check out www.capitalcityfirephotos.com , www.summerdalefire.com , or www.duncannonfire.com for some picture.  Thanks to Tanker 25 (Monroe) for covering while we were out.


First Due Chimney Fire and a Gas Odor?

03-20-08- At 2042 hours the 19-01 box was sent for the chimney fire with extension at 45 Sherwood Circle.  Chief 19 (Dressler) arrived and was advised by FF Stone that there was no extension and most of the fire was out.  Crews removed the remaining fire from the fire box and ran the chains to unblock the chimney while another crew double checked for extension.  Then at 2332 hours Co 19 and Truck 17 were sent to 3 Fashion Circle in the 19-01 box to assist UGI with gas meters.  UGI was called for an odor inside and he was getting up to 300ppm of CO around the chimney clean out.  After a little investigating it was determined that there was a fire in the chimney above the clean out and also a fire above the damper.  Truck 17 set up and dropped a few chimney bombs while the Engine crew removed the debris.


3 Alarm House Fire....

02-23-08 - Just before midnight the Engine was transferred to Co. 14 (Camp Hill) while units were on a house fire in Lemoyne.  Shortly after arriving at Co. 14, Command 1 (West Shore) hit the 3rd alarm bringing the Engine to the scene.  Shortly after that, Command asked for 3 tankers due to water issues which brought Tanker 19 to the scene.  The engine was assigned water supply with the tankers until it was determined that they were not needed.  The Tanker was placed in service in about an hour and the engine crew reported to manpower.  Some pictures can be seen at www.capitalcityfirephotos.com .  Thanks to Tanker 24 (Lisburn) for transferring.


Tanker on the Road Again

02-13-08- The Tanker started off the day at 6am with a trip to Susquehanna Township for the working duplex fire.  The Tanker crew assisted with checking for extension and some overhaul.  Then at 5pm the Tanker was off to Lebanon County for a propane truck that had crashed earlier in the day and was on fire.  The crew hauled 10 loads of water in 10 hours before returning at 4am.


 

Two jobs in 14 hours

02-12-08 - Around 4pm on the 12th the 21-02 box was hit for the house fire at 700 Middle Ln.  Engine 221 (Creekside) went on scene with smoke showing.  Engine 19 was the next in company and assisted with checking for extension.  Crews found a working kitchen fire and the Creekside crew made a quick stop.  At 0556 on the 13th the Tanker went to Susquehanna Twp. in Dauphin County for a working house fire.  The crew assisted with overhaul operations.  Click here for some pics..


Engine on a 3-Alarmer

01-13-08 - A little after 4 pm. Sunday the engine was sent to Co. 14 (Camp Hill) to cover while they were working a 2 alarm fire in Wormleysburg.  Minutes after arriving Command 1 (West Shore) hit the 3rd alarm bringing Engine 19 to the scene at 10 Poplar Street in Wormleysburg.  The crew assisted in extensive overhaul of a row that was off.  Pictures can be seen at www.wsbf.org and www.capitalcityfirephotos.com


Crash with ejection on the Interstate

01-12-08 - This afternoon the 20-96 box was sent for the crash with ejection on I-81 at MM 62.  Tanker 19 was the first fire unit on scene and the crew assisted EMS with patient care.  One patient was flown to Hershey Medical Center via Life Lion.  The tanker went available after all patients were loaded and transported.  There are some pictures on www.summerdalefire.com


2 alarmer in Silver Spring Twp.

12-26-07 - Around 1030pm units were sent to Wild Rose Lane in Silver Spring Twp.  Chief 31 (McDonald) arrived with fire showing and requested a 2nd alarm.  This area is notorious for some large fires due to the lack of fire hydrants.  Tanker 19 arrived and set up drafting operations at the end of the road, however they did not need it.  Engine 19 came on 2nd alarm and assisted with overhaul before returning.  Around 5am today the Township companies were out at 5 W. Pine St. for an electrical fire.  Chief 17 (Lantz) held the box to Truck 17 and Engine 19 to investigate.


 

Engine Stand-by

12-08-07 - Today the Engine and Crew covered Co. 33 (New Kingstown) while they escorted Santa around their extensive first due area.  A special thanks to the men and women from 33 for the breakfast and the hospitality.  While no calls were handled we were able to catch up on some sleep.


 

First Due Cars and House Fire

12-02-07 - At 0327am the 19-01 box was sent for the house fire at 813 Wertzville Road.  Lt. 119 (Dressler) arrived and advised of two cars off to the rear with extension into the eaves of the house.  Engine 19 arrived and deployed 3 handlines and Tanker 19 fed the engine.  Engine 20 then layed in to the Tanker.  The 19 boys made a quick knock on the fire.  Thanks to everyone for another fine job.  Click here for some pictures.


 

First Due Garage Fire

10-22-07 - At 1220 pm the 19-02 box was hit for the garage fire at 9 Larch Lane.  Engine 19 and Chief 19 (Dressler) arrived to find smoke from the garage and a good samaritan using the garden hose in the window.  A line was pulled and crews found a small fire in the garage.  A quick knock was made and the house was opened up for ventilation.  Upon making entry to the garage FF Rott found two dogs which were able to escape once the garage door was opened.  Thankfully the dogs were not injured.  Read more and some pics click here.


Off to Monroe for the house fire.....

10-17-07 -  Around 8pm the Tanker was alerted with Engine 430 (Hampden) to transfer to Co. 25(Monroe) while they operated a vacant farm house fire in their first due.  While enroute Command 25 requested Tanker 19 to the scene to assist with water.  The tanker arrived and dumped about 3 loads of water before being released.  Due to the house being vacant and well involved crews launched a defensive attack from the outside.


First Due House Fire

10-08-07 - At 1130 this morning the 19-01 box was sent for the house fire at 576 Magaro Road.  Chief 19 was on scene within 2 minutes with nothing showing, however there was an odor present.  About a minute later the master bedroom window broke due to the heat and smoke and small amount of fire became visible.  The homeowner then advised the Chief that he thought the attic was in fire as well. Tanker 19 arrived and pulled a line to extinguish the fire.  Additional units arrived to assist with checking for extension as well as an extensive overhaul operation.  A second alarm was struck due to the temperature outside.  Manpower was exceptionally high for a daylight call due to the Columbus Day holiday.  Unfortuneately the camera was not present for any pics.  Thanks to everyone for a job well done!!


 

Training night....

08-28-07 - For our regularly weekly training we met to complete our FIT testing to be SCBA qualified.  All interior firefighters had to successfully complete this testing process.  This entailed getting "sweaty" and then being hooked up to the computer while performing various functions.  The Chief was the guinea pig and once he passed everyone else had to pass or his foot would be up their backside.  Read more....


 

 

3 alarm job in the Township

07-25-07 - This afternoon the 18 box was hit for the house fire on W. Columbia Road.  Engine 19 arrived as the second in engine and secured it's own water supply.  The fire ran into the attic and 2 lines were deployed to assist with extinguishment as well as exposure protection.  In addition to the suppression efforts, the 35 and 24 foot ladders were thrown to assist with the operation.  Read more and see some pictures by clicking here....


 

Close Call in Hampden

07-11-07 - Around 5:10 pm the box 30-09 was hit for the electrical fire at 4206 Nantucket Drive.  Chief 17 (Lantz) was in the area and went on scene with a light smoke condition.  Engine 19 arrived as the first in piece and investigated to find a fish tank pump had caught fire and burnt up the wall in the basement.  The fire extinguished itself sometime earlier in the day.  Read more and some pics click here...


 

Same pole hit within 3 weeks

06-24-07 - For the second time in 20 days the 19-01 box was sent for the auto overturned with entrapment at 310 Wertzville Road.  Chief 19 (Dressler) and Chief 119 (Parnell) arrived at the same time to find negative entrapment and one person with minor injuries with the car laying on it's roof after careening into a pole.  See pics by clicking here....


2 alarm house fire with entrapment

06-18-07 - Around 1530hrs crews were sent to 718 Middle Lane in the 21 (Creekside) box for the kitchen fire with entrapment.  Crews arrived to find fire visible with and a female trapped in the basement.  Rescue 18 arrived and went to work rescuing the resident.  Chief 18 (Rudeck) and another firefighter made the grab and the resident was transported to Holy Spirit as a precaution.  Way to go guys!!  A second alarm was sounded due to the 96 degree temperature outside.  Thanks to New Kingstown and Monroe for the cover-up.


 

Afternoon crash w/ entrapment

06-04-07 -  Around 4pm this afternoon the 19-01 box was sent for the auto overturned at 314 Wertzville Road.  Chief 19 (Dressler) arrived right after dispatch to find a car on it's side and a young male with his arm pinned underneath the car.  More of the story and pictures...


 

Evening Crash

05-31-07 - Around 2130 hours today the 19-01 box was sent for the crash with the auto overturned at Wertzville and East Penn Dr.  Chief 19 (Dressler) arrived about 1 minute after dispatch to find 3 cars involved with one being on it's roof with a male still inside.  Pics and more of the story....


 

First Due 3 alarmer

05-12-07 - Around 5:30pm today crews were sent for a deck on fire at 15 Cherish Drive in the 19-01 Box.  Crews arrived to find heavy fire on the rear and roof area.  Due to being a larger home with vaulted ceilings additional crews were summoned to assist in extinguishment and extensive overhaul.  Truck 17 (Midway) and Truck 30 (Hampden) were both utilized as well as Engine 25 (Monroe) for their CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System).  Click for Pics.


 

Working House Fire

05-07-07 - This afternoon the Tanker was alerted with other units to the working house fire on Hilltop Road in Penn Township, Perry County.  Tanker 19 arrived and the crew went to assist with extinguishment while the driver dumped 4 loads of water at the dump site.  The smoke column could be seen many miles away and unfortunately the house was a total loss, however; no one was injured.  See some pics...
